Presenting August!
Just got back from holidays and don't have pics on the computer yet but I'd like to share a poem I wrote up there while just sitting in the screened porch, listening and watching all around me. It struck me that it really does feel like August now.
August Is Announced
The nights are cool
The berries are gone
The lake is colder
There's mist at dawn
Crickets are singing
In the evening still
We're building fires
To take off the chill
The winds of August
Leave tell-tale signs
The gusts and the gales
Sway the lofty pines
The evergreen's laden
Heavy with cones
Some leaves are tinged
In colourful tones
The woodpecker's drumming
His August tattoo
And the raucous bluejay
Is screaming at you
The asters in bloom
Are staking a claim
All down the pathway
They shout their name
The squirrels are chattering
About what's ahead
They eat all they can
Before summer is dead
August's announced
By Nature's call
Lending its voice
To the prelude of Fall
Mother of Invention, savouring these last few weeks of August.

Old Lady: Thanks. Got a lot of catching up to do in the blog world...am still doing laundry in the real world! Would love your Aug. poem. Bet the signs are real different down there.
The edit program was not working and clumped everything together...this is not the spacing I had written! Argh!

It is a lovely poem and I am glad to see that you are back.
The tree in front of my house is one of the first to change it colours (and it is doing so now).
Isn't it funny how we detest those hot and humid days of mid to late summer and when the cool nights signalling summers end arrive we are filled with a tinge of angst at the impending end of sunlight and greenness?

You know, I'm struck at the difference between the Augusts of my childhood (the hottest days were always in August, everything seemed brown and wilty) and my Augusts now (cooler than July, chilly nights, greener than July). Bizarre.
And I, too, am mourning the end of this summer that, once again, went way too quickly.

Richard: Thanks! And I don't want to hear about your tree changing colour so soon! Ach! We saw a lot of sumach turning on the way out of the Quebec bush!
And, yes, we are saddened by the waning of summer but I actually love the fall with its brisk crisp air and vibrant colours. The end of summer brings us other associations though, for kids and me..SCHOOL! Parents too, I imagine sometimes dread the back to routine. I will enjoy this fall as I'm taking a year off from teaching to regain optimum health.
Diana: Hard to say whether it's our difference in perspective from childhood to adult, or if the weather/climate is actually changing. Up here, it can be either very cool or heat wave hot in August...always a crapshoot.

I would add:
This time in August
The sun hangs low
If we glance at the horizon

upps it entered by accident:
try again:
This time in August
The sun hangs low
If we glance at horizon
The blaze does glow

Lynn: Thanks! Good verse. I'm missing the lost sunlight already. Seems a long time since Summer Solstice.

I was going to make an attempt, but nothing. I'll have to get back to you in September when I get chilled by the windy breezes of Fall. I LOVED LOVE LOVE sweatshirt weather.
Also, while I am here...

I'd add that we are about one month behind you down here in DC. In September we will hopefully start to feel this way. Welcome home!

Lovely poem. I do like August. It's always when I just start to really appreciate summer and then it flies by.
Welcome home!

Whoops did this out of order!
Barbara: You're lucky to have more time to savour summer!
Bobealia: Thanks! It is pretty brisk here in the morning! I used to love the smell of fall leaves burning but we're not allowed to do that in town anymore.
